Pretoria is the political and diplomatic hub of Gauteng province and is situated an hour’s drive north of Johannesburg. [The municipality is called Tshwane and for now, the city itself is still Pretoria. However, both names are sometimes used.] FIFA 2010 sports fans will feel right at home here because most of the population is either rugby or football mad – or both.
Pretoria is a multicultural city, with a decidedly international flair. The city is home to embassies from the Americas, Europe and Asia as well as Africa, and restaurants abound to suit every cosmopolitan taste.
Pretoria is also a student town and boasts a youthful exuberance. The student section of town lies in a suburb called Hatfield. It’s abuzz with music venues, hip coffee shops and cocktail bars. If the credit card needs a workout, head for the sprawling Menlyn shopping centre just further east – known as one of the largest shopping centres in Africa.
